Background to the Specialist Apprenticeship Programme

ConstructionSkills National Specialist Team works with specialist sectors within the construction industry and has developed a range of Specialist Apprenticeship Programmes (SAPs). These provide training for small sectors where no provision exists within the FE college system and meet the demand for qualifications away from traditional providers.

This knowledge and expertise has now been applied to the built heritage sector. The National Specialist Team are working with industry experts to develop a range of Heritage Specialist Apprenticeships for – brickwork, carpentry, joinery, specialist leadwork, plastering (fibrous and solid), painting & decorating, stonemasonry, wall and floor tiling.

The Heritage Specialist Apprenticeship Programme is aimed at practitioners with a mainstream NVQ Level 2 or 3. Candidates meeting the required criteria will follow a bespoke Heritage Specialist Apprenticeship Programme in their craft occupation and up-skill to the Heritage Skills NVQ Level 3.

A combination of 30 days off-the-job training (college or private provider) and on-the-job, in-company training takes the candidate through a series of modules providing the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to work in the built heritage sector of the construction industry.

Assessment and award of the Heritage Skills NVQ will be achieved by the candidate gathering evidence from the workplace, under the guidance of a recognised Assessor, building up a portfolio matching the requirements of the Heritage Skills NVQ.

We now wish to work with employers and individuals with a specific interest in conservation, repair and maintenance who are in a position to enrol apprentices on a delivery pilot of the heritage brickwork programme.

Full course details are available here (pdf format).
